Did you know that the high rates of GBV and poverty in South Africa create a vicious cycle that traps women and girls in a cycle of violence and insecurity?
We invited Black Sash to join us and share information about their work in their communities which is training people on the constitution, making people aware about the social grants that are available for them and most importantly how they can access them.
Here are some of the points that Black Sash mentioned:
There are 7 grants available in South Africa.
SASSA has a mandate to give people social grants and they are provisions made for those who do not have IDs and/or birth certificates. I.e. if an adult or child has never had an ID/birth certificate they can still apply for grants but must have either (a). Baptismal certificate from church. (b). Letter from the school. (c). Letter from the ward councillor or traditional leaders or (d). Affidavit stating that they have applied for an ID/birth certificate.
Access to these grants bring some sort of relief to some families. They provide for underprivileged children, provide for the elderly, provide for those who live with disabilities, etc.
